Cherry Blossoms Ottawa 2026: When to See Them & Where to Go
Ottawa Bloom Status: April 17, 2026
Ottawa's cherry trees are currently showing Green Buds — the buds are visibly swelling and beginning to show green colour. Based on current Growing Degree Day accumulation at the Ottawa airport weather station, we forecast peak bloom between April 28 and May 5, 2026.
This timing is typical for Ottawa, which sits in USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 5b — a full zone colder than Toronto, which accounts for the roughly 7–10 day lag in bloom timing compared to southern Ontario cities.
Best Places to See Ottawa Cherry Blossoms
1. Dominion Arboretum — Ottawa's Premier Spot
Address: Maple Drive, Central Experimental Farm, Ottawa | Trees: 50+ | Entry: Free
The Dominion Arboretum is Canada's national arboretum and home to an exceptional cherry collection. Managed by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, the arboretum maintains trees representing dozens of species and cultivars, meticulously labelled for the botanically curious. The grounds are open year-round and free to visit.
The arboretum is located on the grounds of the Central Experimental Farm — a National Historic Site right in the heart of Ottawa. Walking through 1,200 acres of agricultural research land with the city skyline in the background is a uniquely Ottawa experience.
2. Central Experimental Farm — Gardens and Orchards
Address: Prince of Wales Dr, Ottawa | Trees: 30+ | Entry: Free
Beyond the arboretum, the broader CEF grounds include ornamental gardens and cherry trees planted along farm laneways. The combination of heritage farm buildings, the ornamental gardens, and cherry blossoms makes for exceptional photography.
The Ottawa Advantage: Double-Bloom Season
Ottawa has a secret weapon that no other cherry blossom city can match: the Canadian Tulip Festival typically runs from mid-May, meaning that in late April and early May, you can see cherry blossoms AND early tulips in the same visit.
Commissioner's Park along the Rideau Canal is famous for its tulip displays, and while the main festival usually begins when peak cherry is fading, the earliest tulip varieties can begin showing colour while cherry blossoms are still at their best. A morning at the Dominion Arboretum followed by an afternoon cycling the Rideau Canal Skateway path to Commissioner's Park is the ideal Ottawa spring itinerary.
Getting There
By transit: OC Transpo routes 5 and 7 serve the Carling Ave corridor, putting you within easy walking distance of the farm's main entrance. The farm is also accessible from Carleton University.
By bicycle: The Rideau Canal pathway and Queen Elizabeth Driveway offer beautiful cycling routes to the farm from downtown Ottawa. The flat terrain makes this an easy 20-minute ride from Parliament Hill.
By car: Parking is available at the main entrance on Prince of Wales Drive. Free on weekends; meter parking on weekdays.
Comparing Ottawa and Gatineau
Just across the Ottawa River, Gatineau Park offers a different kind of spring nature experience — wildflower season in the Gatineau Hills typically peaks in late April and early May, coinciding with Ottawa's cherry blossom window. A day that combines the Dominion Arboretum with a drive through Gatineau Park captures the full breadth of the Ottawa Valley spring.
